Hello from Sawrey (Miss Potter village)

Far Sawrey lies in rolling farmland and wooded hillsides above Lake Windermere. It is the area where the "Miss Potter" film is based upon. This is a blog from the village shop, which is not dis-similar to the Beatrix Potter Ginger and Pickles Shop here in the heart of the village where Beatrix Potter lived and wrote her world famous stories including "The Tale of Peter Rabbit"

P.S

If you have not already I recommend that you have a look at the lakeland cam pictures published today! They are awesome! The new born lamb picture is just amazing and tony the man who takes the time to take all of these wonderful pictures is fantastic, co-incidently there is an article about him in the local westmorland gazette this week, he is about to retire from his job as a postman after 20years........I always wondered what he did for a living that allowed him to get out and about and bring us all some absolutely fabulous photos every day, I note from his website that donations can be made directly to him to allow him to keep doing what he does, seems like a great place to send a few pounds to if your not here in the lakes as often as you would like, he provides a great service! Here is sending Tony very happy retirement wishes

Greetings from a very very wet sunday in Sawrey, just taken the above picture, but it does not quite do the rain justice! "its that fine rain that soaks you through" (a.k.a Peter Kay)
The trees will be happy with all of this rain, however that joy had not spread to the campers ont he camp sites this morning!, It did not look like much fun packing up tents and camping equipment in the rain!
Its extremely quiet in the village today! only a few hardened walkers out jumping through the puddles! Mother is at home finishing off her hawkshead school project wall hanging that she did with the children a few weeks ago, she is doing all of the sewing up, its a wall hanging that represents fletchers field which is behind the school and soemthing the children are working on in school
No one won the bonus ball quiz last night, although the number that did come up was the usual number of denis from Buckle Yeat, I think he forgot to put it on! Opppzzzz, bread and jam for dennis this week :-)
The free range eggs that we have started selling from Low Fulshaw farm are todays top seller, a customer who bought some yesterday said that she had 2 double yokers in her eggs yesterday!
A HUGE thankyou goes out to sawrey stores very own man that can aka Simon and his son Alan who have knocked the dents out of the van ready for its new covering this week, he also fixed the door handle that had broken, We dont know what we would do without you!

Happy Sunday from Sawrey :-)

Good morning from Sawrey, its a grey start to the day here today, there are not many people at the camp sites today....
News on the van front, the print work is being done as I type and hopefully the sticking ont he van will be done next week sometime, there was a bit of confusion, but its all sorted now.....
We took a delivery of groceries to a holiday cottage at Wray village, no one was there when we arrived, it took them 2 days to find the shady nook I left it in......Opppppzzz
The tassles have been put up over the door as the ram raiders keep trying to get in and steal the bird nuts, we have fed them all winter and I think they think that they are one of the family now!
Talk of the village today is of a story in the daily mail today, the Lefton family who live on Belle Isle on Lake windermere have have all been sent to prison for perjury! Despite been named last year as the 31st richest woman in britain, money has not bought them freedom, it seems that her son had been send some speeding fine documents through the post, his mother took delivery of them and under oath denied that she had ever received them, all of the family were jailed for 3months which was cut by the court of appeal yesterday to 6weeks.........Lake Winderemre or jail? I know which I would prefer :-)
Roger the builder has taken delivery of his giant mouli!!! I wonder what he is going to do with it??? I will keep you updated

Greetings from Sawrey....its quite a warm day here today, we have had ram raiders here in the shop, description of assailants, there was 2 of them, they had 2 legs, 2 wings, both had beaks and one had a green stripe down its back, they flew in and flew out taking with them a fresh ripe fig a piece! One fig was stolen and one was dropped in the mad dash.....any sightings please contact sawrey stores immediately or phone crime stoppers, but please dont have nightmares do sleep well......

At the fruit and vegetable market this week I said what have you got that will give roger the builder a run for his money in the title of the biggest **** in sawrey.......The picture enclosed is my offering ;-) (its a Mouli-some kind of giant radish which is lush grated in salads I am told)

Apologies for blog absence this week, the council are trying their damdest to push me over the edge, its strange, I do not want to sink to their level but I feel I have to respond to them in the manner they are corresponding with me, soon it will all be over I hope....

Greetings from sunny sawrey............boy it aint half hot!!! Its been a great few days weather wise, the shop has been busy but today there are lots of sad faces as the holiday is over for many, back to school tomorrow for many.........
I have to say the amount of tourists coming into the shop asking where Hill Top is is making the annual pilgrimage to Mecca look like a small gathering!

Lots of Japanese people in the shop this afternoon, all loving Peter rabbit who has been restored to his rightful place outside nestled in with the fruit and vegetables..... A customer took him home a couple of years ago when the shop changed hands and yesterday remembered she had him and asked if we would like to have him back....YES PLEASE was the answer...so welcome home Peter rabbit...

The campsites were full of people packing up to go home this morning, I sense a bit of a lull coming! Although I only ever used to come to the lake district after school holidays, so you never know!

The lambs are all leaping around the fields with abandonement and are loving the weather! Such a contrast to last years easter when it was a bit of a wash out! A customer has just been in and said the horse she bet on came in first in the grand national yesterday...you know who you are.WELL DONE!

My little friend Alan came to the campsites with me yesterday and was a GREAT help, its lovely watching him grow in confidence, he is excellent at sorting out the van!!

Another customer of ours is going to put a mention of our blog on her website, so in return I am putting a link to her site, they are a lovely family and I feel absolutely sure is will be pleasurable staying on their farm http://www.lakesfarmstay.co.uk/shepherdscottage/index.html

Happy Sunday from Sawrey :-)

Greetings from far sawrey, its another fantastic day here today, the sun is shinning and it is truly lovely out there!
News from Braithwaite hall is that over £300 was raised over the holiday weekend from serving cream teas! Well done ladies! Everyone worked so hard! Soon I believe they will be able to "buckle yeat" at the hall as the funds raised enough to buy half a gate!
Benny and all at Sawrey Stores send Norman get well wishes, he went into hospital over four weeks ago, he got over what he went in with and is still in as he has developed a hospital bug and is having to endure barrier nursing, poor norman, we send you all of our love for a speedy recovery....
We got some exciting exotic fruit from the market this week, they are called "rambutans" they taste like a lychee and they have gone down well in the village http://www.rambutan.com/

The only problem with going to the fruit market is that we are in undated with cardboard boxes here at the shop, thankfully though we have solved that problem this week with the discovery of a woman in millom who recycles cardboard, she supplies cages which you fill and when they are full she comes and collect it for a small fee, she even takes wet cardboard! we are really happy knowing the cardboard is going to get recycled rather than into some landfill site. We also got quite a lot of bedding plants this week and they are selling really well....
Mother has gone to Ambleside to pick up the tray bakes today, they too are selling really well, its good for walkers who want to take chocolate up onto the hills as the chocolate and white chocolate brownies do not melt in your bag! Genius idea!
Hi ho hi ho back to ice cream selling I go...........Happy thursday :-)

Greetings! Apologies for my absence, it has been bonkers this past week!!! This is the very first time I have sat down in the shop for a week! Thought I would take some time to blog......

The fruity business has gone well and esther from next door has been helping.....At the campsite earlier in the week I did a double take, I know its been a while since I went camping but boy how things have changed! There was a family sat on a blow up sofa and two blow up chairs, watching a dvd cartoon on a blow up table!!! Amazing! The shop got steadily busier as the week went on and then I had to take the day off to go to leeds..... I had a medical appointment for my case, the council have insisted I see a psychiatrist before they give me any remedy, so I duly obliged with hopefully the last hurdle they will make me jump through........it was all going ok until he asked me what kind of birth I had??? How could I answer that!!! Three hours later I emerged from his office completely drained and had to drive back to the lakes.....

Friday was extremely busy in the shop as it was good friday, bread was flying out of the shop as quickly as the ice cream, saturday was a lovely sunny day and again it was really busy, then I had the task of moving house on sunday, and the shop had its busiest day on record....so all in all its been quite a week!!!
The ladies of the village served cream teas in the braithwaite hall all afternoon and raised over a £100 for the all! Well done ladies!
And finally our neighbour Roger came into the shop to announce that has the biggest cock in the village!!! Don't worry he means his new cockerel, I THINK!!! ............I HOPE!!!........... He has also taken delivery of 6 pullet hens! All good fun hey...
The road between the villages has been gridlocked on many times over the easter weekend, a sign of things to come all summer I guess!
Our get well wishes go to our other neighbour, Mr Pennington @ West Vale hotel who has twisted his ankle by falling down the stairs! OUCH....Get well soon MR P
The easter bunny missed me yesterday!!! I am going out to out to look for him right now

Happy Monday from Sawrey

Monday, April 02, 2007

Greetings from Far Sawrey, its a beautiful spring day here today....Lots and lots of people out walking and looking for hill top....Bottles of water are literally flying out of the shop as soon as I can stock the fridge up...
I launced sawrey stores goes mobile this weekend, I took the van to local campsites to sell fresh fruit out of the back of it, its been a great success thanks to the weather! I must admit, at 8am this monday morning when I was sat on the shore of lake windermere at low wray campsite I didnt want to be anywhere else in the world!!! When I think back to some of the stomach churning monday mornings I used to endure when I was a lecturer!.....
Anyway there I was this morning quietly selling my fresh juicy fruit to suprised campers when from the tent nearest to the van came some strange noises! Then i realised that whoever was in there was getting intimate! What do you do! So I just carried on selling the bananas and juicy plums! Boy did the couple look a tad embarrassed when they finally came out of there tent, by the noise they were making tho, I do not think they were shy by any means tho ;-) trust me to pull up my van right there!

Anyway its all good now, I am over the shock :-) and I am looking forward to getting out and about with the van this summer........its a long winter!

Mum has gone to the cash and carry in barrow today, we are stocking up for the bank holiday weekend, if the weather holds it should be a busy one!

Village news this week is there is a cream tea afternoon at the braithwaite hall on easter sunday to raise money for the hall, yum yum!

A local farmer won the bonus ball competition this week, we have started sending it over to the pub for a night to help fill it up and since we started it has been filling up every week which is good!

Better go and sell some more cold drinks, its hot out there!
